Learnings from my 3 Internships:
My Journey

15 November 2024

Breaking into UX Design is often described as an uphill battle. Many aspiring designers fear that the industry is too competitive, too saturated. But from my experience, this journey is less about saturation and more about adaptability. Having completed three internships in diverse environments, I can confidently say that UX is vast, and every experience brings new opportunities to grow.

My First Internship: Shibui Studio – A Marketing & Design Crossover

At Shibui Studio, my role extended beyond UX into marketing. Surprisingly, I found myself working on Canva-a tool I initially thought was too simple for a designer. However, this experience taught me the importance of flexibility. Sometimes, you have to start somewhere, even if it feels unconventional. This willingness to embrace various tasks ultimately helped me develop into a versatile UX designer. It also made me realize that design isn't just about interfaces—it’s about communication, branding, and strategy.

My Second Internship: Lollypop Design Studio - wearing Researcher hat

At Lollypop Design Studio, I took on the role of an industrial researcher, where I gained hands-on experience with various research tools and methodologies. This internship was instrumental in strengthening my ability to conduct in-depth user research, analyze behavioral patterns, and translate insights into actionable design strategies. It solidified my belief that research is the backbone of any successful design process.

My Third Internship: Samsung Research Institute - Designing for a Multi-Device Ecosystem

The most transformative experience came at Samsung Research Institute in Bengaluru. Here, I had the opportunity to design experiences for a multi-device ecosystem. This experience pushed me to think beyond single-screen interactions and consider how users transition seamlessly across different devices. I learned to design for fluidity, ensuring an integrated and cohesive experience across Samsung’s diverse ecosystem of products.

What These Internships Taught Me

Each of these experiences gave me a unique perspective on UX Design:

  • Shibui Studio taught me adaptability and the importance of versatility.

  • Lollypop Design Studio strengthened my research foundation, equipping me with the tools to uncover user needs.

  • Samsung Research Institute expanded my understanding of designing for interconnected experiences beyond a single product.

Is UX Design Really Saturated?

Many people claim UX is oversaturated, but in reality, it is evolving. The field is becoming more specialized, and employers seek designers who bring a unique blend of skills to the table. If you’re adaptable, willing to learn, and open to exploring different aspects of UX, the opportunities are endless.

For those just starting out—embrace every opportunity, even if it feels unconventional at first. Every experience adds to your skillset, and before you know it, you’ll find your place in the ever-expanding world of UX Design.
